
Case Study #4: EM and GPR
Using ERI and SP geophysical methods as a means to determine ground water deposits and flow allowing for more accurate searches for water for well placement.
EM-31 and ground-penetrating radar (GPR) are highly effective geophysical tools for environmental site characterization. The EM-31 provides rapid, non-invasive mapping of subsurface conductivity variations, helping identify buried waste, utilities, salinity impacts, and potential contaminant migration pathways. GPR complements this by delivering high-resolution imaging of shallow subsurface features, enabling detection of tanks, drums, voids, piping, and stratigraphic changes.
Together, these methods offer fast data collection, broad coverage, and enhanced confidence in locating environmental concerns before intrusive investigation begins.
For these projects, EM and GPR were conducted to map contaminated groundwater, tanks, and shallow structures that may allow for preferential transport of contaminated groundwater.
Photo 1 (below): Using EM and GPR we were able to characterize the AC shaft and the top of cavern over at RickWood caverns showing efficacy of categorizing subsurface anomalies using proven geophysical applications.
